The Declaration of Independence was drafted primarily by Jefferson between June 11 and June 28, 1776, before being revised by fellow committee members John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert R. Livingston. Congress formally adopted the document on July 4, printed copies were distributed the following day, and delegates signed the engrossed version on August 2, another warm summer day with temperatures reaching about 80°F (27°C).
