One case, Viramontes v. Cook County, challenges a Cook County, Illinois, ordinance banning the possession, sale and transfer of certain semiautomatic rifles, including AR-15-style firearms. The plaintiffs argue the weapons are in “common use” for lawful purposes such as self-defense and therefore protected by the Second Amendment.
