Trump Warns Europe of 100% US Tariffs Over Digital Tax Plans

trump warns europe of 100% us tariffs over digital tax plans

President Donald Trump has threatened sweeping trade retaliation against European countries considering new taxes on US technology firms, warning that any nation implementing such measures would face steep tariffs on exports to the United States.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said several European governments are “discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American companies,” adding that some are “close to actually doing this.”

He warned that any country that moves ahead with such a tax would immediately face a 100% tariff on all goods shipped to the United States, describing the measure as automatic and non-negotiable.

Trump also said the proposed tariffs would override existing trade agreements, whether already signed or still under negotiation.

The remarks escalate long-running tensions between Washington and European capitals over digital taxation policies, which US officials have previously argued unfairly target major American tech firms.

European governments have defended digital services taxes as a way to ensure multinational technology companies pay what they describe as a fair share of revenue in countries where they operate but may not be physically headquartered.

Trump’s warning signals a potential sharp escalation in transatlantic trade friction if the proposals move forward, with the US threatening across-the-board tariffs affecting a wide range of imported goods.
