Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, scored the second-fastest hat-trick in World Cup history as France finished with three wins from three matches and qualified for the Round of 32. During the emphatic win, head coach Didier Deschamps was missing from the sidelines. The coach had left the United States a few days earlier due to the sad demise of her mother. Reportedly, the French team requested FIFA permission to wear black armbands during the game against Norway in tribute to Deschamps’ mother; however, the request was denied by the Apex body, according to the Sun.
