Sustainable Fashion with Matka Silk
Made from waste cocoons of mulberry or tussar silk, matka silk is handwoven. The result is a silk textile with a distinctive rough texture, which makes it unique. It is also known as the linen of silks, making it perfect for wearing during the sultry months. Even though it falls under the silk category, it is more affordable than many other types of silk because it makes use of waste fibre. Since it is upcycled and produced from broken cocoons or threads from which a moth has already emerged, it is considered a sustainable textile. It is also regarded as cruelty-free because, unlike in traditional silk production, where the moths are boiled alive, in matka silk production they are allowed to hatch before the fibres are collected. As a result, it is often known as “peace silk”.
