The Islamic State (ISIS) has issued a fresh call for supporters to carry out lone-wolf attacks during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, describing the global sporting event as a “golden opportunity” for violence.
In an editorial published in its weekly propaganda magazine Al-Naba, the terrorist group referred to the tournament as a “pagan occasion” taking place in the “heart of Crusader America.” The article urged followers to exploit the large crowds expected at matches, fan zones, transportation hubs and public gatherings.
According to the publication, ISIS encouraged supporters to view the World Cup as a chance to launch attacks, claiming that stadiums, roads and public spaces would offer numerous potential targets. The editorial concluded with a direct appeal to extremists not to “let the opportunity pass.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to attract millions of visitors from around the world, with the US hosting the majority of matches alongside Canada and Mexico.
Massive Security Operation Underway
US authorities say extensive security measures are already in place to protect fans, athletes and host communities throughout the tournament.
The FBI said it is working closely with law enforcement agencies to assess and respond to any potential threats linked to the World Cup. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has also been coordinating with host-city officials to monitor security risks and strengthen preparedness.
Officials have described the security effort as one of the largest ever mounted for a sporting event in the United States.
Federal agencies have allocated hundreds of millions of dollars for security operations, including advanced surveillance systems, drone detection technology and counter-drone capabilities. More than 400 law enforcement agencies are expected to assist in protecting stadiums, team facilities, hotels and other event-related locations.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, stressing that fan safety remains the highest priority ahead of the tournament.
