According to local reports, air traffic controllers were informed that the aircraft was experiencing a mechanical problem before contact was lost. Flight tracking data showed the jet had departed San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, at about 18:18 local time and was bound for Austin, Texas, before diverting to Laredo.
