Lewis Hamilton created history and broke Michael Schumacher’s world record after winning the 2026 Spanish GP on Sunday (June 14) at the new Madriring street circuit in Madrid, Spain. The 41-year-old started the race in second spot but managed to beat pole holder George Russell to win a dramatic race to register an unprecedented 106th career win.
Hamilton started the race with a unique strategy on the soft tires before pitting twice to come out on hard and mediums. After the second pit stop, he managed to come out ahead of Russell. He held the lead despite some late drama, which saw championship leader Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc unable to finish the race and having to retire their cars due to mechanical issues with three laps remaining. The seven-time world champion went past the checkered flag while a virtual safety car was deployed.
Lewis Hamilton Creates History
Hamilton has won the Spanish GP for the 7th time in his career, which is the most by any driver in history. The Englishman had previously won at the old Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Most Race Wins In Spanish GP
| Driver | Won | Years |
| Lewis Hamilton | 7 | 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2026 |

Hamilton now has seven or more wins in four races (British GP, Hungarian GP, Canadian GP, and Spanish GP), which is the most for any driver in history. Schumacher has registered a minimum of seven victories in three races (French GP, Canadian GP, and Brazilian GP).
This is also the 13th time Hamilton has managed to get a podium finish at the Spanish GP, which is also the most by any driver in history. He shared this record with Schumacher, who had 12 podiums in Spain.
Moreover, Hamilton has 13 or more podiums in two circuits now (14 at British GP, 13 at Spanish GP). No other driver has stood on the podium 13 times in a single race.
A 56-Year-Old First
Hamilton is the oldest driver since Jack Brabham in 1970 (South Africa GP) to win an F1 race. The last driver to secure victory in a Formula One Grand Prix after the age of 41 was Nigel Mansell in 1994 at the Australian GP.
Meanwhile, this win ended a 686-day wait for Hamilton, as his last victory had come while driving for Mecedes in the 2024 Belgium GP. The most successful F1 driver in history won a race for the first time since joining Ferrari in 2025.
This was Hamilton’s 31st for the Prancing Horse, and the victory makes him the first driver to win a race for each of Formula One’s three legendary teams, McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari. Overall, he is the 16th driver to achieve a victory for three different constructors.
