In 2017, Parvathy Thiruvothu faced online harassment, including abusive comments and reported threats, after she criticised misogynistic dialogues in the 2016 film Kasaba during the International Film Festival of Kerala. She had pointed to a line delivered by Mammootty’s character, a police officer, where he tells a female colleague that he could hit her so hard it would disrupt her menstrual cycle. Her views sparked backlash from some fans, while also getting support from others who backed her stand against sexist content in cinema. Following this she even filed a police complaint against online bullying.
