How Air-Cooled Engines Work?
Air cooling was the most commonly used method of managing heat in the engine before liquid cooling came into the scene. You can find its relevance today, particularly in commuter motorcycles and small engines. Air-cooled motorcycles depend on moving air to regulate engine temperature. They have cooling fins machined into the cylinder and engine block, which increase the surface area exposed to airflow. As the motorcycle moves, air passes over these fins and draws heat away from the engine naturally. So, the whole process runs on one fundamental concept, and that is- moving air carries heat away. The faster and more efficiently air flows over a hot surface, the more heat is removed. Some of India’s most popular commuter motorcycles like Hero Splendor Plus, Honda Shine, and Bajaj Platina 110, use this setup.
