Just when concerns around facial recognition technology seemed to have cooled down, Meta finds itself back in the spotlight. A new investigation claims the US-based tech giant may already have much of the technology needed to identify people through its smart glasses, even though the feature has not officially launched. According to a report from WIRED, Meta has quietly added components of an unreleased facial-recognition system to the Meta AI companion app used with its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. The feature, reportedly known internally as “NameTag”, is said to be designed to recognise people seen through the glasses and notify the wearer when a match is found.
