The FIFA World Cup 2026 is all set to take place from June 11 in three countries – USA, Canada and Mexico. For the first time in history a total of 48 teams will be taking part in the biggest footballing extravaganza. Amidst these 48 teams. there are very few pieces of fabric in world sports that carry as much prestige, expectation, and sheer cultural weight as the yellow jersey of the Brazil national football team. The team are still the record champions of the tournament, having won the trophy five times. This is despite the fact that they have not won the tournament since 2002.
When the Selecao takes the pitch at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, that iconic canary yellow will once again command the globe’s attention. But as Brazil chases an elusive sixth FIFA World Cup under the guidance of manager Carlo Ancelotti, the history of how that jersey came to be serves as a stark reminder of the immense pressure that these players face.
Why Brazil’s Jersey Is Yellow?
One of football’s greatest ironies is that the most joyful and recognizable uniform in the sport was born from a national tragedy. Before 1950, Brazil wore white jerseys. But after the catastrophic Maracanazo – a shock 2-1 defeat to Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup final on home soil – the white kits were deemed cursed and unpatriotic.
The Brazilian Sports Confederation then demanded a fresh identity in their jerseys, that should be incorporated from all the colours of their country’s national flag. The winning design came from a 19-year-old newspaper illustrator named Aldyr Garcia Schlee, who perfectly balanced the yellow shirt, green trim, blue shorts, and white socks. Since the introduction of Schlee’s Canarinho kit in 1954, Brazil has captured a record five World Cup titles.
Yet, for the class of 2026, the yellow jersey is currently as much a burden as it is a badge of honour. It has been 24 long years since Cafu hoisted the trophy in Yokohama in 2002, and that was the last time that Brazil won the tournament. Since then, the jersey has seen quarter-final exits, the historic 7-1 humiliation in 2014, and penalty shootout heartbreaks.
