External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday met Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing to discuss key facets of the bilateral partnership, including connectivity and trade.

Aung Hlaing arrived in India earlier this morning on a five-day trip, starting with a visit to the Mahabodhi temple in Gaya before flying to the national capital. The high-level visit is aimed at ramping up cooperation in defence, trade and border security.

Myanmar is one of India’s strategic neighbours and shares a 1,640-kilometre border with a number of northeastern states, including militancy-hit Nagaland and Manipur.

The Myanmarese leader is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising several cabinet ministers, senior officials and business leaders.

“Appreciate his positive sentiment towards deepening our longstanding bilateral cooperation,” Jaishankar said on social media after the meeting.

“Look forward to his meeting with PM @narendramodi to advance our partnership for peace, progress and prosperity,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold wide-ranging talks with Aung Hlaing on Monday.
