Karnataka CM News Highlights: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday resigned from his post after being asked by the Congress leadership to “make way for a new person”, bringing an end to days of intense speculation over a leadership change in the state. During a closed-door meeting attended by more than 30 ministers before submitting his resignation, Siddaramaiah thanked his cabinet colleagues for their support and reiterated that he would abide by the party high command’s decision.

The veteran Congress leader later confirmed that he stepped down following directions from the leadership, saying he had always maintained that he would resign whenever asked by the high command.

With Siddaramaiah’s exit, senior Congress leader and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar is now likely to take oath as the next chief minister on June 1, according to sources.
