In June 2022, Eknath Shinde rebelled against Uddhav Thackeray, taking away a majority of the party’s MLAs, toppling the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, and splitting Shiv Sena into two. Just like the AIADMK, an “unnatural alliance” became one of the major triggers behind the Sena split. There was growing dissatisfaction within the Shinde camp over the alliance with ideological rivals. The two factions then engaged in a bitter battle over the party’s name, symbol and legacy. Eventually, the Shinde faction was recognised as the “real” Shiv Sena, retaining both the party name and the iconic bow-and-arrow symbol, while the Uddhav faction adopted the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).
