Instax Mini 13 Review: A Fun Polaroid Camera That Keeps Things Simple

instax mini 13 review: a fun polaroid camera that keeps things simple

Instant or Polaroid cameras are now popular again especially among teens, Gen Z users and content creators who love sharing moments on platforms like Instagram. While smartphones and professional DSLRs focus on perfect shots, these cameras are more about capturing real-time moments and printing them instantly.

And when it comes to instant cameras, one name that has clearly cracked the formula is Fujifilm. This Japanese tech giant has built a strong fan base in India with its Instax lineup. I recently got my hands on the new Fujifilm Instax Mini 13. Priced at Rs 8,499, this is the successor to the Instax Mini 12.

To really test it, I took it along on a short trip to Himachal Pradesh with my family. The goal was simple — capture memories from my 11-month-old son Vyom’s little weekend vacation. And honestly, that’s exactly where this camera shines.

Design and Build

The first thing you notice about the Instax Mini 13 is its design. It looks playful, colourful and very Instagram-friendly. Fujifilm has gone with a rounde, soft design that almost feels like a toy (in a good way).

The camera is available in multiple colours, and the one I used was the Purple variant. It’s lightweight at around 327 grams (without batteries).

Even though it looks bulky in photos, it is quite easy to carry around. That said, it is still bigger than your phone, so you will feel it in your bag. It’s not something you can just slip into your pocket.

The build is plastic but, to be honest, the grip is comfortable. Even if you are new to cameras, you won’t feel confused using it.

Easy To Use

This camera is all about simplicity. There are no complicated settings, no menus, no screen just point and shoot. I just twisted the lens to turn it on, framed my shot, and pressed the button. That’s it. No settings, no screen no confusion.

The newly added 2-second and 10-second self-timers expand the freedom of posing, framing, and shooting distance when taking selfies. And it is actually useful. I used the 10-second timer a lot during my trip. Instead of asking someone else to click photos, I would place the camera somewhere, get into the frame with my family. The self-timer feature made things easy.

There is also a small selfie mirror near the lens. It helps while taking selfies, though it is very basic. Even someone who has never used a camera before can pick this up and start clicking instantly. I found the new polaroid camera surprisingly useful during the trip.

Features And Performance

The Instax Mini 13 keeps things simple but still gives you what you need. There is a close-up mode for selfies and nearby shots. I used this a lot for photos of my son and it worked well. There is also automatic exposure. The camera adjusts brightness on its own. You don’t have to think about anything. The flash is always on. You cannot turn it off. Sometimes that is annoying but most of the time it helps.

I Shot An Entire Indian Wedding On A Phone And Here’s How It Performed

In terms of performance, I did not expect professional-level photos from this camera and you should not either. But within its use, it does a good job.

Indoor photos came out nice. Faces looked good and the exposure was balanced most of the time. The best photos I got were inside our home, just capturing small moments of my son playing in inflatable swimming pool.

Close-up shots are also good. Selfies were also good and framing is better than older models.

But outdoors, especially in bright sunlight, the camera struggles. Some photos looked too bright. Some lacked detail and. When the subject was far, the camera struggled to focus . This is clearly not a camera for landscapes or serious photography. It is for people and moments.

The camera uses Instax Mini film, which you have to buy separately. Each pack gives 10 shots, so you do think before clicking. But that is also part of the experience. The print comes out in a few seconds. Watching it develop in your hand feels special.

Verdict

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 13 is not about perfect photos. It is about fun. I used it during my son Vyom’s trip, and it helped me capture small moments that now feel more special as printed photos.

Yes, it has its issues and the cost of film can also frustrate you. But if you understand what this camera is made for, I think people will enjoy using it. If you want something simple, fun, and different from your phone camera, this one makes sense.

If you already have the Instax Mini 12, I don’t think you need to upgrade. The overall experience is almost the same, and the self-timer is the only real addition here. But if you are buying your first instant camera, the Mini 13 is a good place to start.
