France Fire Clouds Explained: Rare Phenomenon Supercharging Deadly Wildfires

In France’s hardest-hit southwestern Gironde region, the wildfires have burned through over 100,000 acres and displaced at least 200,000 people, one of the largest peacetime evacuations in the country’s history. As flames came within a few miles of Bordeaux, a center of France’s winemaking region, on Monday, all train services in the region south of the city had been canceled and Mayor Thomas Cazenave said he was preparing for the possibility that more evacuation notices could be issued.
