The 2026 FIFA World Cup has not been short of controversies. The tournament has faced scrutiny over controversial refereeing decisions, especially concerning the VAR technology that has made a big impact on the outcomes of several matches. Now, as the tournament reaches the business end, FIFA has made a significant change to the VAR operations. Going forward, a VAR official and a reserve VAR official will be present in the stadium during matches, which is a major change from previous games where the officials were stationed at FIFA’s Video Operations Room at the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) in Dallas, Texas.
