Suryakumar Yadav’s days as India’s T20I captain might be coming to an end as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to discuss his future in the top job ahead of the selection committee meeting to pick the squad for the tour of Ireland and England. A new captain could be named for the twin assignment where the Men in Blue will play seven games with two games in Ireland (June 26 and 28) and five in England (July 1 to July 11).
The BCCI’s apex committee is set to meet tomorrow, with the T20I captaincy change set to be one of the topics of discussion. Sources have told Times Now that Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, and Ishan Kishan are in contention for the role.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Era Over?
Suryakumar is in danger of losing the top job despite leading India to their third T20 World Cup in his last assignment. The 35-year-old had taken over the captaincy after Rohit Sharma’s retirement post the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
Under Suryakumar’s leadership, India has a near-flawless record and has won every bilateral series and tournament they have played. This includes triumphs in the 2025 Asia Cup and 2026 T20 World Cup. He has led India in 52 T20Is, in which India won 42 at a record win percentage of 84%.
However, his form with the bat has dwindled since taking over the job on a permanent basis. Since July 2024, he has played 45 games and scored just 932 runs at an average of 25.88 and strike-rate of 152.03. He has made just six half-centuries in this period.
The 35-year-old also had a poor IPL season after years of being a run machine in the tournament for Mumbai Indians (MI). In the 2026 IPL, he made just 270 runs in 13 innings.
Meanwhile, the new captain could be in charge of the Indian team for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. After winning the T20 World Cup in a post-match press conference, Suryakumar claimed that the Olympic Games gold was his next goal.
