A mystery fever outbreak in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district has raised concerns after one person died and dozens of residents developed symptoms linked to jaundice and gastrointestinal illness. Health authorities are investigating a possible connection to contaminated drinking water in Jeolikote and eight neighbouring villages.
The outbreak has prompted emergency public-health measures, including medical camps, water disinfection and alternative drinking-water supplies.

Suspected water contamination under investigation
Officials are investigating whether contamination of the local drinking-water network contributed to the sudden increase in illness. Residents have reported symptoms associated with jaundice and gastrointestinal infections, while several patients, including children, have reportedly shown unusually high liver enzyme levels.
Doctors have advised people in the affected communities to avoid drinking water from the suspected source and use boiled or otherwise safe drinking water until the investigation is complete. Authorities isolated the Durgapur water source after initial testing identified abnormalities. Emergency sanitation measures have since included chlorination and cleaning of household water-storage tanks.
Although water samples collected after treatment reportedly showed no bacterial traces, officials are continuing inspections of the local sewerage and drinking-water pipelines to identify possible points where sewage could enter the water supply.
One death reported
The outbreak has also resulted in a reported death. A local woman, Anita, died after her illness progressed to a critical stage, with doctors reporting that she had suffered from jaundice for some time before being admitted to hospital.
Medical facilities in the region have seen a significant increase in patients from Jeolikote and surrounding villages. According to local hospital officials, around 10-12 patients from the affected areas were admitted to a local hospital, while several others were reportedly arriving each day with symptoms associated with jaundice and gastrointestinal illness.
Patients with severe disease are being transferred to specialised hospitals in Haldwani, Bareilly and Delhi.
Schools closed amid health concerns
As authorities work to determine the cause of the outbreak, schools and Anganwadi centres in the affected areas were ordered to close temporarily as a precautionary measure.
Emergency medical teams have been deployed, while tanker trucks are supplying alternative potable water to communities affected by the disruption. More than 100 household water-storage units have reportedly been cleaned and disinfected as part of efforts to reduce the possibility of continued transmission.
What are the health risks of contaminated water?
Unsafe drinking water can transmit a range of waterborne diseases, particularly when sewage contaminates drinking supplies. Depending on the organism involved, contaminated water can contribute to illnesses such as acute gastroenteritis, hepatitis A, hepatitis E, typhoid and other infections.

Jaundice – characterised by yellowing of the skin or eyes, can have several causes and should not automatically be attributed to contaminated water. Anyone developing jaundice, persistent fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, confusion or worsening symptoms should seek urgent medical care.

Until authorities establish the precise cause, residents should follow official public-health guidance. Using boiled or reliably treated drinking water, maintaining good hand hygiene, keeping household water containers clean and avoiding potentially contaminated sources can help reduce exposure to waterborne infections.
Continued water testing, disease surveillance, and rapid medical treatment will be crucial while officials need to identify and eliminate the source of contamination.
