In Vasundhara Raje‘s retention, the reading is that the party can do well without dissent in a state where the chief minister and government are already wobbly, and that her mass base can make things tougher without accommodation. She was part of the previous team too, and keeping her on was always going to cost less than sidelining a leader of her standing. Her retention is less reconciliation than arithmetic – the party conceding that a restless following, left unmanaged, is a liability it cannot carry into an election.
