Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a neurological condition in which cerebrospinal fluid gradually builds up inside the brain’s ventricles, the fluid-filled spaces within the brain. Although the amount of fluid increases, pressure measurements can remain within a normal range, which is where the condition gets its name. CSF normally circulates around the brain and spinal cord, cushioning them and helping with several important functions. When its circulation or absorption becomes disrupted, fluid can accumulate and enlarge the brain’s ventricles, potentially affecting nearby brain tissue.
