Four people were killed and five others injured after a metal container carrying gelatin sticks exploded in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district on Saturday, police said.
The incident took place in the Umarkhed area when a tractor used for blasting work was brought to a welding workshop on Dhanaki Road for repairs.
Police said welding work was underway when the metal container carrying gelatin sticks, which was attached to the tractor, suddenly exploded. The blast also triggered a fire.
An air cylinder located near the tractor’s rear tyre was also found ripped open after the explosion, police said.
Four people suffered severe burn injuries and later died, an official from Umarkhed police station said. Five others were injured in the incident.
After hearing the blast, local residents rushed to the spot and helped take the injured to Umarkhed Sub-District Hospital. They were later shifted to another hospital for further treatment. Police have started an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the explosion.
