Boxer Sumit Kundu was forced to retire from his men’s 70 kg round of 16 match against Iraq’s Ali Qasim Al-Sarray due to a knee injury. Sumit Kundu was all set to qualify for the quarterfinal, and a win was within reach when his knee gave up. He was leading 3-0 after two rounds and needed to just see off the final round for the win. He took a heavy punch in the third round and suffered an awkward fall. He was seen limping while walking back to the corner. After being attended to by the medical staff, he decided to withdraw from the match.
Sumit Kundu had stormed into the pre-quarterfinals after clinching a unanimous decision win over Thailand’s Bunjong Sinsiri. After missing out on a medal at the Commonwealth Games, he was hopeful of doing well at the Asian Games, and he did look in great form in the two games he competed in before picking up an injury.
After his win over Sinsiri, Sumit had said that he will chase gold at the Asian Games.
“I will win a medal for my family,” he told AFP after beating Sinsiri.
“I will go for gold,” he added.
