Veteran England batter Joe Root became the second-fastest batter to reach 23,000 international run mark by doing it in 521 innings during England’s first ODI against Sri Lanka in Durham on Tuesday. Only legendary Indian player Virat Kohli, who reached the milestone in 490 innings, is ahead of Root in this list. Root also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 522 innings. Root reached the milestone during the innings in which he struck five fours and scored 44 off 52 balls. For the majority of his time at the crease, he appeared calm, rotating the strike and finding the boundary when chances presented themselves.
