Kosovo lies in Southeast Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, and shares borders with Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro. It declared independence from Serbia in 2008, which makes it one of the newest countries in Europe. Fewer than two million people live there, and the official languages are Albanian and Serbian. The country is landlocked and hilly or mountainous, with the Sharr Mountains in the south.
