“Whatever the merits and demerits of these arguments about supply chains, Chinese chokepoints, and the obvious national security dimensions of third-party trade, the appearance of double standards and apparent hypocrisy will invariably weigh on perceptions of the U.S. as a negotiating partner ,” the former US State Department official added.
