Chennai: A history-sheeter identified as Kannan was hacked to death by a group of men in Chennai on Saturday night, with the incident captured on CCTV. The footage shows Kannan standing by the roadside and using his phone when three men suddenly approach him with sharp weapons.
They repeatedly attack him as he falls to the ground. Several people can also be seen trying to intervene and save him. Police said preliminary investigation suggests that previous enmity was behind the murder. Five people have been arrested in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin questioned the state government’s law and order situation following the murder.
In a statement, Udhayanidhi said a murder had taken place in the state capital a day before Chief Minister Vijay was scheduled to speak in the Assembly on the Police Department’s demands.
He also alleged that the deceased, whom he described as a history-sheeter, had joined the ruling TVK seeking protection for his life.
“Tomorrow, before the Hon’ble Chief Minister delivers his reply on the debate regarding the Police Department’s demands, one of his own party functionaries has been murdered in the capital city,” Udhayanidhi said.
He questioned whether people should be more concerned about the deterioration of law and order or about the alleged presence of history-sheeters within TVK.
“Instead of thinking about how to blame the DMK for this as well, the government should take steps to ensure the safety and security of the general public,” he said.
