Severe Mental Illness Can Cut Life Expectancy By 15–20 Years: Cancer, Heart Disease Among Risks

For people living with severe mental illness, the health burden may extend far beyond the symptoms of their psychiatric condition. In England, people with severe mental illness can die 15-20 years earlier than the general population, according to NHS data. And while suicide is an important contributor to this gap, it is not the whole story. A substantial proportion of these premature deaths are linked to physical illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, liver disease and cancer.
