bank strike from sep 28 to 30: sbi issues fresh advisory; will atms work?

The State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a fresh customer advisory ahead of the three-day nationwide bank strike proposed by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) which is announced from September 28 to 30, 2026.

Ahead of the strike, the SBI has advised its customers to complete important banking transactions to avoid possible inconvenience. The announcement is relevant for services that require a visit to a bank branch or assistance from bank employees.

Customers with pending documentation or other branch-dependent work should therefore plan these transactions ahead of September 28.

SBI said it is making efforts to provide essential banking services during the strike period. However, branch operations could be affected depending on employee participation.

Will ATMs remain operational?

SBI has also advised on the use of ATMs saying that for the customers who need cash during the strike period, they can use ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs).

Further, customers can also use Customer Service Points (CSPs) for available banking services, and further advised customers to use its digital channels for routine transactions.

The uses of internet banking, YONO, mobile banking and UPI for transactions will also remain available that can be completed digitally.

However, customers should not assume that every branch-dependent service can be completed online. Work involving physical documents, certain cheque-related services or other staff-assisted processes could face delays if branch operations are affected.

The proposed September 28 to 30 strike is part of the union forum’s wider programme, which also includes a continuous strike from October 26. Notably, it is a weekend of September 26 and 27, making it a long break.

A meeting has been called by the Finance Ministry with the chief executives of public sector banks and regional rural banks on Monday to discuss measures to ensure continuity of banking operations and essential customer services during the three-day strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions to press for 5-day banking and other demands.
