The students blamed workers of both the NSUI and the ABVP, who they said were also scuffling with each other outside Ramjas, each accusing the rival of breaking the same code. Their real grievance, though, was with what came next. When they approached the police over the assault, they alleged, nothing moved. “They took the phone, handed it to the police, and told us to go collect it ourselves. The police did nothing,” a student said. One phone, they claimed, came back bent, “not the way it bends from a fall on the pavement, but from being deliberately struck,” he said.
