Earlier, India had a disappointing outing on Day 1 as they lost both singles contests to South Korea. India were banking on Dakshineshwar Suresh and Sumit Nagal to give India the lead; however, both suffered close defeats. Suresh was having a great year and did well at the Winston-Salem, where he went on to beat American Marcus Giron. However, Kwon was still a difficult opponent to beat, especially on hard court. Suresh gave him a close fight but lost the game 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
