A 32-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband following a quarrel over their strained marital relationship in central Delhi’s Baljeet Nagar, police said.
The accused, identified as 24-year-old Chandrapal Bhati, was arrested within hours of the incident after police suspected his involvement based on the statement of the couple’s 10-year-old daughter and other evidence.
Police said the incident came to light on September 14. The woman was found dead inside the couple’s rented room in the Anand Parbat area, where she lived with her husband, their two minor daughters and her mother.
According to police, the 10-year-old girl woke up around 3:45-4 am and saw her father near her mother, checking whether she was breathing. He then left the house. The girl later found her mother unresponsive.
The woman was rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. During an examination, nail-like marks were found on the left side of her neck, raising suspicion of strangulation.
The Crime Team and Forensic Science Laboratory team inspected the scene. A postmortem was later conducted to establish the exact cause of death.
Based on the minor daughter’s statement and circumstantial evidence, police registered an FIR against the husband on September 15.
A police team later traced Bhati to Bulandshahr and arrested him.
During interrogation, police said Bhati admitted to strangling his wife after an altercation over their strained marital relationship and frequent quarrels.
Police said no previous criminal involvement of the accused has come to light. Further investigation is underway.
