Gurugram Police have formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case involving woman biker Shivani “Siya” Chauhan and car driver Kalyan Bainsla.
The SIT will be headed by Susheela, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Crime Against Women, Gurugram. The team will now take over the investigation into the Golf Course Road biker crash case.
A court has also granted Gurugram Police two-day custody of Kalyan Bainsla and Lavneesh Gurjar, the two accused arrested in connection with the case involving Sia.
Police had sought custody of Bainsla, telling the court that the accused needed to be questioned and the crime scene recreated to establish how the incident took place. Investigators also told the court that they needed to ascertain who all were present inside the car at the time of the incident.
Both accused were produced before the court with their faces covered.
During the hearing, the defence opposed police custody and questioned the attempt-to-murder charge. The defence argued that the case under Section 109 had been registered amid what it described as a media trial surrounding the incident. Sections related to stalking and insulting the modesty of a woman have been added to the FIR.
The defence further argued that an attempt-to-murder charge requires a motive behind the alleged offence and claimed there was no established motive in this case.
The defence also pointed out that the identity of the biker was not initially clear, arguing that the riders were wearing helmets and clothes that made it difficult to establish whether the person involved was a boy or a girl.
The case has drawn considerable attention after Sia was allegedly hit by a car while riding a motorcycle on Gurugram’s Golf Course Road. Police have registered an attempt-to-murder case in connection with the incident.
Sia, speaking about the accused being produced in court, said she had learnt through media reports that two people had been arrested.
“Today is the accused’s court appearance, and through media sources, I got to know that two people have been arrested. Look, this is just the first phase of the action, and this had to happen. Let’s see what the end result of today’s court appearance turns out to be,” she said.
