If you are an Android user or use an Android phone, there is a security warning you should know about. India’s cybersecurity watchdog has issued a critical alert about multiple vulnerabilities in Android operating systems. These security flaws could let hackers steal your personal information, run harmful programs on your phone or take control of important phone settings.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) issued the warning on September 14, 2026. It affects Android versions 14, 15, 16, 16-QPR2 and 17. If you use an Android phone, check which Android version is running on your device.
However, this does not mean that every Android phone running these versions has already been hacked. The actual impact can depend on the smartphone model, software build and security updates installed.
“Multiple vulnerabilities have been identified in Android which could be exploited by an attacker to execute arbitrary code causing denial of service, privilege escalation or disclosure sensitive information on the targeted system,” cybersecurity agency said in the advisory.
According to CERT-In, multiple vulnerabilities have been found in different parts of the Android operating system. These include Android Runtime, Documents UI, Media Codecs, MediaProvider, Telephony, Wi-Fi and other system components.
Now, what does this mean for a normal smartphone user? To simply put, these security flaws will give attackers a way to misuse your phone if the vulnerabilities are successfully exploited.
CERT-In has warned about risks including remote code execution, privilege escalation, denial of service (DoS) and sensitive information disclosure.
Remote code execution is one of the major concerns. It means an attacker could potentially run harmful code on a targeted device. Privilege escalation, meanwhile, could allow an attacker to gain higher-level permissions than they should have.
