A Hitler in Me. A Hitler in You.

There is a Hitler in me. There is a Hitler in you. Not the historical man, not his ideology, not his crimes. Something more fundamental: the shared capacity, rooted in an aggressive endowment Freud considered original to the species — intensified, in the rare and formidable, by what Freud called the reborn “His Majesty the Ego,” the silent conviction, sharpened by repeated proof of one’s own competence, that a judgment so often vindicated has earned a permanence ordinary judgment has not — to convert certainty into superiority, entitlement, and, wherever power exists to enact it, domination over a mind that never consented to being ruled.
