FIFPRO, the union for European soccer players, has demanded reforms to FIFA’s decision-making structure following Gianni Infantino’s failed attempt to sell stakes in the governing body. FIFPRO argued that the sell-off proposal exposed the flaws in how the sport is governed. Following the World Cup final, Infantino-led FIFA proposed to raise $20 billion by selling 20 percent stake in the body. The proposal received huge backlash and FIFA was forced to withdraw it. “FFE was an attempt to convert the game’s core competitions into an investable, tradeable and undervalued financial asset for private capital. Any future proposal to grow solidarity funding should be built together, through trusted governance, not advanced unilaterally,” the union said.
