These include progressive difficulty swallowing food or liquids, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, chronic heartburn or indigestion that is worsening or changing, persistent cough or hoarseness, and a family history of upper digestive tract cancers. To diagnose, the patient is advised to undergo an upper GI endoscopy, and in most cases a biopsy is also taken from any suspicious area.”
