A man allegedly turned a routine evening at a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Nagpur into chaos after launching a bizarre chilli-powder attack on bank employees before fleeing with Rs 4 lakh in cash. His escape, however, lasted just 30 minutes.
The incident took place around 6 PM on Thursday, September 10, at an SBI branch in Nagpur, Maharashtra. According to the police, the man entered the bank posing as a customer before suddenly attacking the employees.
CCTV footage from inside the branch, later shared on X, shows the man approaching the cash counter and throwing red chilli powder at a bank employee. As the powder left the staff struggling to see, chaos quickly erupted inside the branch.
The accused, dressed in an orangish kurta and black trousers, had covered his face with a handkerchief. He continued throwing chilli powder at employees as they tried to move away from him. Amid the confusion, he allegedly grabbed Rs 4 lakh from the cash counter and ran out of the bank.
Some employees and the bank’s security guard reportedly attempted to chase him, but the man managed to escape into the crowded area. Bank officials then alerted the police, who began examining CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the branch to identify him and track his escape route.
Police teams reportedly set up checkpoints and alerted patrol units in the area. Their efforts paid off within 30 minutes, when the suspect was traced and detained.
The accused was identified as 28-year-old Suraj Bhojraj Borkar, a B.Sc. graduate who is currently unemployed. Police recovered the entire Rs 4 lakh allegedly stolen from the bank. He has been arrested and is being questioned.
The unusual robbery has since caught the attention of social media users after the CCTV footage surfaced online. Several users reacted to the man’s apparent approach to the robbery.
