Germany’s foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, has criticized Kyiv for not directing enough of the money it receives from Western partners toward buying German made weapons, arguing that Berlin’s massive support for Ukraine should also translate into business for its own defense industry. Germany ranks among Ukraine’s largest bilateral backers, having provided or set aside more than 43 billion euros, around 50 billion dollars, in what is described as civilian assistance, along with roughly 58 billion euros in military aid since the war began in 2022.
