Carney’s message from Ottawa took an entirely different direction. The Canadian prime minister began by paying tribute to organised labour, saying: “On Labour Day, we honour the workers who have built our country and celebrate the proud history of organised labour in Canada.” He credited unions with helping secure “better pay, safer workplaces, pensions, benefits, and paid leave” and said they had helped ensure that “prosperity and opportunity are shared among the many”.
