Jhakar said, “we have been asking for hostels for years. but the grounds get rented out for weddings.” He alleged that when he and his team of volunteers reached the spot, not a single worker from the administration had reached the location. He added that NSUI volunteers were the ones that carried out the rescue operations. He said, “no authorities arrived for hours. We volunteered to help with the rescue ourselves. We pulled out three people- two of them were already dead.” He recalled students wailing in agony, as one trapped student said, “mujhe zinda rehna hai sir (I want to be alive).”
