45-Year-Old Dies During Dahi Handi Celebrations In Pune
The Pune incident is another tragedy reported during this year’s Dahi Handi celebrations, after a 45-year-old woman lost her life when a temporary iron structure collapsed on her in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Salma Salauddin Pathan, a resident of Old Sangavi. According to a PTI report, the incident occurred after a Dahi Handi event organised by the Vighnaharta Mandal had concluded and workers were in the process of dismantling the temporary iron frame.
Pathan was reportedly standing in the crowd when a heavy portion of the structure suddenly gave way and fell on her. A video of the incident has since surfaced, showing the woman among a crowd moments before the structure collapses. The footage also shows people immediately rushing towards her after the accident.
Pathan sustained serious injuries to her head in the incident and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. However, doctors later declared her dead.
Police said the temporary structure was being removed after the Dahi Handi celebrations had ended when the heavy section fell on Pathan.
The incident comes amid several injuries reported during Dahi Handi celebrations in Maharashtra. In Mumbai, at least 22 ‘Govindas’ sustained injuries during the celebrations, officials said on Saturday, according to the PTI report.
