Running to more than a thousand pages in English, the novel follows interconnected Hungarian, German, Jewish and Roma lives across decades of European upheaval. Fascism, the Second World War, communism, sexuality and family history move through its many narratives. The English translation, completed by Imre Goldstein, took four years.
