The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the CBI on bail application filed by former principal of R G Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh, accused of financial irregularities and corruption.
The Bench of Justices M M Sundresh and P B Varale sought the investigating agency’s response by October 15, the next date of hearing. Ghosh approached SC after Calcutta HC dismissed his bail plea.
Ghosh has been in jail for nearly two years in connection with the case since his arrest after complaints of irregularities in procurements at the Hospital.
Appearing for Ghosh, SC Advocate-on-Record Aditya Giri and Advocate Hemant Kalra submitted in the petition that “investigation is complete and continued incarceration of the accused serves no further investigative purpose”.
The appeal stated that prosecution has cited 147 witnesses and 622 documents, apart from extensive documentary and digital material, making the trial likely to take considerable time.
On merits, advocates Giri and Kalra submitted in the petition that no money trail or unaccounted wealth has been traced to him, and that the supplementary charge-sheet attributes the alleged receipt of gratification from vendors to co-accused Akhtar Ali, against whom the Petitioner had himself initiated an inquiry.
Ghosh’s legal team has also relied upon parity, pointing out that co-accused Shashikant Chandak, against whom the CFSL report allegedly indicates forgery, was never arrested and was granted bail, while co-accused Ashish Kumar Pandey was granted bail by the High Court of Calcutta on 01.07.2026.
