Silchar: Tension gripped the historic Cachar College in Silchar on Tuesday after a clash broke out between student groups affiliated with the ABVP and NSUI over the wearing of hijab on the college campus.
The incident occurred during an NSUI membership drive being held at the college. According to allegations, ABVP members arrived at the venue and objected to the programme. They also reportedly raised objections to some NSUI women students wearing hijab on the campus.
What began as a verbal altercation between the two groups soon escalated into a physical confrontation, with members of both sides allegedly engaging in scuffles and violence.
Several NSUI members were reportedly injured in the clash. There were also allegations that some female students wearing hijab were assaulted during the confrontation.
Police were alerted following the incident and quickly reached Cachar College to bring the situation under control. The injured students were reportedly taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Tension continued to prevail on the college campus following the clash, with security personnel maintaining a presence in the area.
The incident comes a day after a section of students from Cachar College submitted a memorandum to the Cachar district administration, seeking a ban on Muslim students wearing religious attire, including hijab and caps, on the college premises.
The clash on Tuesday has further intensified the controversy surrounding the issue, with the situation being closely monitored by the authorities.
