The effects depend on the species of snake, the amount of venom injected and where the bite occurred. Venom can interfere with the nervous system, affect blood clotting, damage tissues or impair kidney function. Some patients can develop weakness, difficulty breathing, abnormal bleeding, severe swelling or other complications requiring urgent intervention. In serious cases, intensive monitoring, breathing support or blood products may be necessary.
