Also known as coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), black lung disease develops when miners repeatedly inhale fine particles of coal mine dust. Over time, the dust can trigger inflammation and scarring in the lungs, making it increasingly difficult to breathe. There is currently no cure that can reverse the lung damage caused by black lung disease. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms, slowing further exposure, and addressing complications.
