For generations, we, the people of this country and across the world, have witnessed, heard of, and sometimes been part of something powerful enough to shake empires, bring down governments and restore faith in institutions. It is the process through which public participation creates pressure, demands accountability and, sometimes, drives change. Much like evolution, protest has shaped societies and altered the course of history. So powerful is this process that it is a fundamental right constitutionally guaranteed to us. Boomers, millennials, Gen Z or Gen Alpha protests have always been part of our social DNA. So why are we talking about protest again, especially when things seem to have settled and victories have already been claimed? Look around. Public opinion today is being shaped by protests happening all around us, on issues big and small. When Parliament does not function, or is prevented from functioning, irrespective of which side of the political divide you belong to, a vacuum is often created and increasingly, that vacuum is being filled by protest.
