A new investigation into the sale of federally protected wild horses has raised questions over whether thousands of mustangs sold by the US government under a legal loophole may have ultimately ended up in slaughterhouses. The report by The New York Times found that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sold around 3,700 wild horses in 2025 for as little as $25 each, raising concerns over the buyers’ intentions and the fate of the animals.
